What Do We Want?

Of course, we want a healthcare system that covers all Americans with great quality care and a relatively low cost of operation. There are many options and methods we could use, but we must tailor the system to our unique culture and government processes. Namely, our legislature must be able to enact these changes as swiftly as can be permitted to the general satisfaction of all parties. The states must be involved and the populace mustn't be overburdened.

Due to their remarkably similar culture and governmental structure, the UK's NHS makes for an ideal system to copy. The UK is comprised of four nations governed by a two-piece governing body with many characteristics that would be familiar to the average American. They have encountered many of the challenges we could expect to face, so their system should be easy to modify to our needs.

The key characteristics that we need to include are as follows; the federal government will act as a single-payer, responsible for funding our initiative and laying out the broad strokes of the system policies. Private insurance, employer-based or otherwise, will ultimately be a supplementary entity. Furthermore, the states will be responsible for fine-tuning the system for their citizens.
